Of historical significance, the oil is listed in the 1983 British Herbal Pharmacopoeia for rheumatoid arthritis, lumbago, and sciatica. On a molecular level, Gualtheria fragrantissima is naturally rich in methyl salicylate. This chemical is the basis of the aspirin group and explains much of the activity of Gualtheria fragrantissima in reducing pain and inflammation in acute muscular conditions.
